Albums of 2009

Does anybody remember the Mid-Year report card article that I’ve done earlier this year in June??? Well, it’s back as the Year-End report card to sum up the best albums that is released this year!!! Would your fave album end up in my Top 10 list?? Read on to find out!!!

Remember, mine’s more towards the critic’s choice. Don’t expect the whole list to be filled with mainstream albums. I’ll provide substantial evidence on why these 10 albums are being chosen. If there’s any views, feel free to comment. =) HERE GOES!!! (Albums are in no particular ranking order, alphabetical though)

1. Alicia Keys – The Element of Freedom [15th December 2009]

Fresh out of the oven, this album was released mid this month. What makes it deserves to be on my list even though its only roughly a week old is that the contents of this album is filled so much with soul. The vibe of this album is modern and contemporary, yet it doesn’t follow any current Pop/R&B trends. Alicia makes her own rules. =)

2. David Guetta – One Love [25th August 2009]

Truthfully, before “When Love Takes Over”, David Guetta was relatively unknown in the mainstream scene. The collab with Kelly Rowland paid off big time, making the song one of the biggest hits of 2009 and propels David towards the mainstream dance crowd. The album is an catchy and addictive effort by David, making it his most mainstream album yet while true to the dance/club culture. Plus the number of well-known collabs adds hype to this album.

3. Gossip – Music For Men [23rd June 2009]

This is the first of 2 albums that I didn’t review. The reason is that these 2 albums are rather alternative and not your typical albums floating around in the mainstream chart, hence there might a conflict. Sure, they didn’t chart well, but both albums sorta represents me too.

Now for this album, it’s rather indie-punk with a little garage rock. Beth Ditto has a gifted voice that nobody can deny. It makes me wanna rock on, sing out loud and just feel liberated. Listen to the album and u’ll know why.

4. Kish Mauve – Black Heart [30th March 2009]

The 2nd of 2 albums that I didn’t review. I’m sure most would know Kylie’s “2 Hearts” right??? Well, Kish Mauve are the writers and producers for it. The sound of Kish Mauve is Electropop, more on the electro side though. Power-packed yet poised, I would consider this album as the soundtrack of my life. It’s very me. So, if anyone could handle this album, they pretty much should be able to understand me. =)

5. Lady Gaga – The Fame Monster [18th November 2009]

Only 8 tracks and it’s an EP, yet it’s on this list!!! I’m sure nobody would disagree that this EP could rival a LP release. Named as Women of the year by various music media sources, Gaga’s pretty much maintained her standards since “The Fame”. Only that this EP is better. A must have for every music listeners out there in general.

6. La Roux – La Roux [29th June 2009]

Ah, the British invasion is still going strong this year. Last year’s was more to soul music (Adele, Duffy) and this year is Electro’s turn to be in the spotlight. This self-titled debut album by La Roux channels the 80’s new-wave electro-pop sound and amped it up, making it relevant to the current sound of Brit-pop, or focasting a sound of the future even. =)

7. Little Boots – Hands [8th June 2009]

Being the winner of BBC’s sound of 2009, this album intrigues me as Little Boots (also known as Victoria Christina Hesketh) is able to link the electro-pop vibe, lyrics and the concept of love all packed into it. Little Boots’ sound is easier to adapt to as compared with La Roux. La Roux’s stuff is heavier on the syth. Both is equally as addictive. =)

8. Rihanna – Rated R [23th November 2009]

Ah, it seems like this album has generated a huge buzz, but it generated little impact at the end. Statistically, this album has generated Rihanna’s highest sales on it’s debut week. While critically, it sees Rihanna moving towards a new direction, darker and edgier. Going to somewhere that no one has gone before. Most people seems to like her mainstream sound on GGGB, but this album has certain cuts of mainstream effort too. So stop judging and listen each detail!!!

9. Shakira – She-Wolf [12th October 2009]

The long awaited album from Shakira, 4 in the number of years. This album is Shakira’s at her most creative yet. Willing to experiment with different genres and sound without over-doing it, shows that she ain’t afraid to push boundaries musically. This is what makes her successful. Sure, She Wolf is weird, but it’s new material and not recycled.

10. Utada – This Is The One [24th March 2009]

Saving the best for last. Haha. Ain’t surprising that this album is both in the mid-year and year-end list. This album is beautifully produced and written, that I can’t deny. The problem is that it’s so underrated, maybe due to the lack of promotion. It deserves some success I guess. Hands down as one of the best album of the year.

One Love is the third single take off David Guetta’s album.

Although I personally prefer “When Love Takes Over” with Kelly Rowland with respect to the song
and the music video for that particular hit. This video isn’t a tad that bad, apart from slightly lousy
effects and all, the dance moves are funky !

Reminds me of what a music edition cellphone or an iPod advertisement would have.

David Guetta went on to have a collaboration with Akon after Kelly Rowland.

I’ve never really liked this song and felt When Love Takes Over was much better.

Anyway, in honest view, the video really sucked.

I mean, it couldn’t have been more… expected.

While watching the video, I only had “Uhm… Okaaaay” on my mind

“One Love” is the 4th studio album by French DJ, David Guetta. It was released on iTunes on 21 August and on physical CD format on 24 August throughout Europe and 25 August in the US. A double disc deluxe edition is also being released, with the second disc containing extended/club mixes of album tracks plus 2 new tracks in a Megamix format.

First Impressions
As Guetta is a DJ/Producer, you won’t be able to spot his vocals in the album. But his presence is as prominent as his collaboraters (It’s his album for damn’s sake). The album is verging into Hip-House (Hip-Hop + Electro/House music) territory by working with Kelly Rowland, BEP, Akon, Kid Cudi, Ne-Yo and Estelle to name a few. I had high expectations for this album due to the clips that I’ve listened to prior to the album release and the hit single WLTK (When Love Takes Over) featuring Kelly Rowland. After listening to the album, it doesn’t disappoint but there’s a couple of B grade fillers in between tracks.

Standout Tracks

• When Love Takes Over
  Featuring Kelly Rowland. First single. Already worldwide hit, this almost-trance souding track is destined to be in contender of being one of the top songs in 2009. Music Buffs would recognise the piano core from the track is borrowed from Coldplay’s Clocks. Another factor that makes it a brillant track.
  BUT, I feel that album version is NOT a true representation of the song (It’s the rushed, CRAPPY radio edit). To enjoy the song in it’s full glory, listen to the impeccable Original Club Version of the track.
• Gettin’ Over
  Featuring Chris Willis, who is Guetta’s frequent collaborator. True to Guetta’s signature style, this is a really funky track. And it’s the 3rd single. Hoo-ray!!! Electro-House goodness, hands down. Intro sounds like the intro of “I Gotta Feeling” (the one included in this album is unnecessary), which Guetta produced too. Yeah, my genre of music is roughly like this track, but I’m a little neurotic at times. =)
• Sexy Bitch
  Featuring Akon. Currently a number 1 hit in the UK and Aus, this song has a thumping club beat which is oh-so-addictive. Yeah, the explicit version is definitely a guilty pleasure compared to the clean version (who uses sexy chick nowadays??).
• Memories
  Featuring Kid Cudi. The melody has plenty of hooks, especially on the chorus. But Kid Cudi’s vocals is a snooze, sorta spoils the track a little.
• On the Dancefloor
  Featuring will.i.am & apl.de.ap, one half of the BEP. Another well produced electro house track filled with energy. The beats are insane. One problem is that it sounds like an extended cut from BEP’s The E.N.D album. Perhaps it’s the involvement of both BEP members.
• It’s The Way You Love Me
  Featuring Kelly Rowland. 2nd of 3rd track to showcase Kelly’s vocals. This one is gonna be in my playlist for a long time. The intro alone is enough to blow my socks off. The vibe of this track reminisce the late 90’s club sound. Definitely a dancefloor staple for me, that is if it’s gonna be release as a single.
• Choose
  Featuring Ne-Yo & Kelly Rowland. What I feel that it’s the weakest of the 3 Kelly-featured tracks. The chorus is catchy but the rest of the lyrics sounds messy.
• One Love
  Featuring Estelle. As it’s title track, the classy vocals of Estelle has done justice to this song. It’s lush sounding. A definite grower, as I don’t think this song would hit anyone immediately. But it’s perfection.
• I Wanna Go Crazy
  Featuring Will.I.Am. I could so totally picture dirrtysean dancing to this song. The moment this song is being played, the impression hits me. Haha. A high NRG club track. (No offence, mammy. =P)
• Toyfriend
  Featuring Wynter Gordon. The middle-eastern influence feels out of place a little. But the chrous is quite hypnotic and I do like it’s heavy bass moments though.
• If We Ever
  Featuring Makeba Riddick. Album closer. Whenever we exercise, there’s always warm-ups and cooldowns. Same goes to clubbing. The beats are rather erratic, in a good way.

Final Verdict
Being an all dance album, it’s at risk of sounding the same. Think Cascada with Miracle/Everytime We Touch/Dangerous. Boring stuff right. This album is not without it’s flaws, ie. for leaning a little towards on the commercial side and a few fillers. I like it that it shows Guetta’s style with compromising and yet without sounding the same on all tracks too. A recommended CD to get. Oh, and get the deluxe edition instead. =)

David Guetta’s next single from his upcoming album One Love is Sexy Bitch which features Akon. He’s really working with big big names – Kelly Rowland, Black Eyed Peas, Estelle, Ne-Yo and Kid Cudi.

One first listen, the lyrics reminds me of Akon’s Beautiful. Both songs basically means the same but just in different words and phrasing. One is beautiful another is a sexy bitch! Yea…don’t you think so? HAHA! But i love the way Akon says “Damn Girl!” It will be a hot one for the clubs. But don’t you think the intro of the song reminds you of one of Britney Spears Circus remixes? The Diplo one in particular. The intro is basicly a rip of from that Circus remix. Maybe its a tribute to Britney Spears. As in calling Britney the Sexy Beeetch! Haha!

Anyways, get ready guys and girls! This will hit the clubs and will hit you like you never seen it coming…
