OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder aka Already Gone/Halo writer blamed Lady GaGa for Leona Lewis’s flop in the US!
He said in an interview…
“In the US, unless you’re Justin Timberlake or Beyoncé, you cannot put out a song and not be in the country when it comes out.
Leona was gone for six weeks when ‘Happy’ came out because she was promoting the record in other countries – it wasn’t her fault; she couldn’t be two places in once.
I had radio stations telling me that they thought ‘Happy’ was the single biggest ballad they’d come across in ten years, but that if Leona didn’t come over here and promote it, it was going to fall.”
However, Tedder also admitted that the impact of Lady GaGa – who has notched up five US top ten hits in the last 12 months – might have adversely affected the single’s chances.
“On top of that, America’s consumed with Lady GaGa and dance music right now, so it’s not the best time for ballads anyway”, he said. “When everything on the radio is blasting out at 120 bpm, a song like ‘Happy’ almost sounds out-of-place.”
For someone who writes only slow ballads, i’m not suprised he’s pointing the gun to artists who have comes out with fast-paced songs. But he really went overboard by saying this shat! To correct him, Leona Lewis did quite a number of performances in the US on the release week of her album. That’s what most artists do anyways! They almost never promote it when they drop a new single. With “Happy” only peaking around 30 plus on Billboard Hot 100, I guess he’s justifying his flop there.
Couldn’t agree more… Dance is the fever but there is always room for other genres. Maybe not no 1, but at least a top 10 perhaps?
I think HAPPY is good but not brilliantly good, compare to last decade bleeding love and we belong together… it lack the element of “Oommh!!!!!”. The Leona Lewis sophomore flopness I rather blame its management to blurr out the chance for making her a all round diva rather than just a ballad singer…. makes me wonder, is it they are trying to make ways for Alexandra Burke, which on the other hand them both have many in commons, with Alex able to put off a up-beat track… Leona still had not show her dancey beat yet.
and what happened to leona’s outta my head!
I think he’s totally wrong. As someone who lives in Miami Beach, I agree that it is easier to launch a career in the US with songs that are catchy/upbeat, but not impossible. There are many famous artists in the US that are proof of this. I think the problem is that people in the U.S. know some of Leona Lewis’ songs (bleeding love), but not who sings them. If an artist is going to focus solely on soft ballads than catchy and upbeat pop tunes, then they have to accept the fact that there is just a smaller market for that genre. It didn’t help that one of the best songs on her album shares the name with a song Ashlee Simpson released about two years ago. In the end, it’s all marketing and PR, and Leona’s team sucks.
Yeah, his comments are bunk. Maybe the flop with “Happy” was that it wasn’t a great song to begin with? And the pop charts have always supported a wide range of musical styles at the same time, even if one particular genre is enjoying an obvious success. How to explain the huge success of Owl City’s “Fireflies” amid all the dance music? Maybe because “Fireflies” is a good song?
There are some things that are just out of your control. In this case, you simply cannot, so he should have accepted it. Leona Lewis never made a big fuss out of it. Even though she sang the single.
There are other artists that have gone through this situation before, so before he opens his mouth next time. Don’t think you’re the only one facing this, others have and you cannot control it. Sometimes it’s just a case of luck, material content, good PR and marketing. Otherwise a great song will just go down the drain and no one will know of it. I’d rather like to know what the hell Marketing and PR are doing with Leona’s single. They must be sleeping. >_<
