upcoming freshies: Little Boots – Illuminations (EP)

As with the last freshies post which I featured La Roux, Little Boots is also from the UK. For those of you who are not familiar with her, I’ve done a short background bio. =)

Victoria Hesketh, also known as Little Boots (her stage name), is a British electropop musician. At the age of 16, Victoria took part in the ITV television talent show Pop Idol, being eliminated after three rounds. She went on to form a Jazz trio, toured Europe with a big band, and later formed the dance-pop band Dead Disco. In 2005, producer Greg Kurstin encouraged Little Boots to continue to write pop music.

Her solo stage name comes from a nickname given to her by a friend after watching the film Caligula (the Latin name Caligula translates as “little boot”).

In January 2009 she came first on the BBC’s Sound of 2009 (La Roux was 5th) and second in the BRIT’s Critics’ Choice Award. Little Boots also collaborated with American rapper Kid Cudi on a new version of his single “Day ‘n’ Nite” to be used to promote his debut album. Little Boots début single New in Town is written about being away from home in Los Angeles. Her début album Hands is scheduled for an 8th June release in the UK. The album is one of the first releases for the revamped Elektra Records.

On 9th June 2009, Little Boots released the EP entitled Illuminations in the US and Canada. It includes “Stuck on Repeat“, “New in Town“, and a cover of Freddy Mercury’s “Love Kills“. “Not Now” and “Magical” is also exclusively included in the EP only.

Little Boots is scheduled to embark on a 5 city North American tour in September in support of the EP. The EP is designed to help to relaunch Elektra Records . Little Boots will attempt to “break” into the American market in 2010 when Hands will be released there.

Hmm, I’ll solely focus on the tracks that is exclusive to this EP, “Not Now” and “Magical“. “Love Kills” appears as a bonus track on the UK iTunes version of “Hands”, which I will review the album too.

Both “Not Now” and “Magical” are brillant pop songs, with the former much more uptempo than the latter (mid-tempo). The use of electro beats excites me as always. Paired with the other 3 songs, it’s a really good EP as an introduction of her to the US market. As for her full album, here’s a teaser: it does have songs that would rival Lady Gaga’s stuff. Stay around for the album review. =)

The cover art for the EP is much nicer compared to the LP (album). She looks really good letting her hair down. Heh.
