album review: The Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D

The E.N.D (The Energy Never Dies for short) is the fifth studio album by the Black Eyed Peas. It was released on June 3rd 2009 in Japan, and is scheduled for release worldwide on June 9th 2009.

First Impressions

rickified:
Their first studio recording in 4 years since 2005’s Monkey Business, it sure is a long wait for fans out there. In between, Fergie and will.i.am both release their solo albums. So, it’s still bearable. =)

The sound of this album has a more techno-funk vibe rather than the usual hip-hop and R&B feeling as compared to their previous albums. Mashing electro elements in songs is the trend now. (Ain’t like Lady Gaga’s kinda electro though) Not a bad listen in general. Just doesn’t exactly hits you on the first listen.

Standout Tracks

  • Boom Boom Pow

Lead single. I’m sure everyone know this song, unless you’ve been sleeping under the rock for the past couple of months. 9 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and still going on strong. This song is BEP’s most successful single to date.

  • Meet Me Halfway

I don’t really like this song initially, but Fergie is very infectious on the chorus. This song would do well in mainstream if being released as a single.

  • Imma Be

Reminds me of “My Humps” due to the beat. Similar structure. It picks up tempo in the latter half of the song.

  • I Gotta Feeling
2nd single. A great party starter song to sing along with your friends with. Hooks aplenty, you’ll be singing and humming to this song in no time. I like the part when they chant about the days of a week =)

  • Missing You
Not the typical BEP sound that everyone knows. Fergie does well with the chorus again. A rather high NRG song.

Final Verdict

rickified:
While the singles works well, the rest of the album doesn’t grabs my attention. I still love the “Monkey Business” era. Tons of single worthy tracks. If you are deciding between the standard or deluxe edition, take the deluxe one. It’s worth every penny. 25 tracks in total, plus I prefer the deluxe side of the disc more. Remixes to their past hits justifies that BEP’s past work are slightly better. Not saying that this album isn’t good, but it’s not their best yet. Just don’t expect to love this album immediately.
